Project: The Holgate Windmill was built in 1770 and was grinding corn until about 1933. It is a Grade II listed building and is a very rare type of windmill as it had five sails and a fantail. Most of the internal machinery is still in place, including the millstones. This mill is the last surviving mill in York and one of only two in all of Yorkshire. It is being restored by a local community group who have been raising funds and working on it for ten years. The windmill is open to visitors on the first weekend of every month. The goal is to open the windmill on a more regular basis, bring it back into working order, and make it a tourist destination for the city of York. Brainstorm and recommend designs that improve the site orientation, interpretive approach to the history and mill workings and the general visitor experience. Present final ideas to Holgate Windmill team.
